“Seeing is a neglected enterprise.”

“I do like photographs where sometimes everything’s lost and in some corner something’s going on and you’re not sure what it is.”

Saul Leiter moved into his East Village studio in 1952. Everyday for sixty years he painted and made photographs there.

His studio is now home to the Saul Leiter Foundation, dedicated to preserving his art, promoting his life’s work and advancing his legacy.

Under the directorship of Margit Erb, the foundation has catalogued thousands of prints and paintings, published books and curated exhibitions around the world.

Saul left behind hundreds of rolls of undeveloped film - just a fraction of what remains unexplored in his enormous archive.

“I’m supposed to be a pioneer in color. I didn’t know I was a pioneer, but I’ve been told I’m a pioneer. I’ll just go ahead and be a pioneer!”
