Origins in Color Returns to Japan, Now in Kagoshima

The Japanese retrospective exhibition Saul Leiter: Origins in Color, first shown in Tokyo in 2023, opens at the Kagoshima City Museum of Art on October 2, 2026, and runs through November 15. The multifaceted show includes black-and-white street photography, with a group of Leiter portraits of artists as diverse as Willem de Kooning and Thelonious Monk; a section devoted to Leiter’s fashion work; a group of paintings interspersed with “early color” photographs; and a set of projectors showing newly discovered images from SLF’s color slide archive.

Meanwhile, the Shiroyama Hotel in Kagoshima will offer a Saul Leiter Afternoon Tea during the exhibition run, with a selection of sweet and savory dishes “inspired by the works and worldview of Saul Leiter.”
